Photo Friday: Trakai Castle

If you ever make it to Vilnius, Lithuania, a day trip to Trakai is an absolute must solely because of Trakai Castle! 😀  It’s an enchanting medieval fairy tale castle that dates back to the 14th-century. The castle was the headquarters for the Lithuanian Grand Dukes since Trakai was the capital of Lithuania, and it’s actually the only castle in Eastern Europe built on an island.

You can’t help but be happy standing in front of Trakai Castle.

My cute little photo permit.

I had to pay an extra 1.50€ to take photos, but it was totally worth it. No one asked to see my permit, but here it is just in case. 😀

Since I caught the 9am bus from Vilnius, I was one of the few people there when I arrived, so getting bomberless shots wasn’t hard. 😀  I hope you like the best of the best for this week’s Photo Friday.  A great deal of the walls are original, but of course, you’ll notice that the floors are modern.

Anyway, this is the best look I can give you to imagine what it was like back in the day, so let’s start at the very beginning. 😀

Walking down this bridge felt surreal.

In we go.

This is the view that you’ll have right after you pay your entrance fee.

Looking back at the main entrance from the top of the stairs.

Heading to the entrance at the top of the stairs.

We’re in! I just loved being in this inner yard. The wooden stairs lead to the galleries.

Looking back at the way I came in.

This view at the top level stopped me in my tracks.

The castle uses this room for important events, such as ceremonies, like it was used in the past.

Access

It’s about 40 minutes away by bus from the station in Vilnius, and it’ll only cost you about 1.80€ one way. Buses run 40-50 times a day.

From the station, keep walking down the road until you see a sign for the castle.  You’ll pass by churches and multi-coloured buildings on the way.  You’ll also see signs with historical information about the area with a map of Trakai on the way. 😀

What do you like most about medieval castles?
