I know that a lot of people want a hotel with a good view and the most modern comforts, but walking into Hotel Chisinau in Moldova is stepping back into the Soviet era.

Hotel Chisinau’s lovely lobby.
It’s cheap, clean, and very convenient. Staying there turned out to be one of the most interesting highlights of the trip, and I highly recommend that any visitors to Chisinau stay here.
Hotel Chisinau is the oldest hotel in the city centre. It was spotless, and I can’t emphasize enough how I felt like I had stepped back in time.
Cleanliness & Condition
– Almost perfect
Considering its age and its charm, Hotel Chisinau isn’t totally modern; it isn’t completely up-to-date with all the latest furnishings, electronics, and things like that, but it’s cozy and comfortable.
Some things could use a little maintenance, like the elevator which gave me the heebie jeebies. However, after having lived in Moscow and found that old elevators that creak and groan are the norm, I realized that I was overreacting. I suppose that things like that add to the time machine experience.
I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that the bathroom didn’t have a shower curtain. I was expecting to see a rug on the wall like in my Soviet-style apartment in Moscow, but the bedspread and pillows gave me Soviet vibes for some reason.

The bed was very comfortable.

The TV, furniture, and fridge facing the bed.
Convenience & Service
– Excellent
Hotel Chisinau is downtown, so it’s close to everything. When you exit the hotel, just keep walking straight down the road to see the main sights.
Before you get to that point, you’ll pass a couple of malls, several restaurants and other stores. You’ll also pass a lot of individual vendours selling everything – clothing, produce, souvenirs, handmade accessories – you name it. You can just enjoy walking around leisurely and not have to worry about public transit at all. I have the worst sense of direction imaginable, and I survived.
If you want to stay in and eat, the hotel restaurant is another world. ↓

Is this cool or what?!
The restaurant staff, which of course is where you get your free breakfast, speak some English.
Make sure you remember to choose which breakfast option you’d like to have at reception for the next morning. Don’t forget to pick up your ticket before you go to the restaurant.
On that note, every receptionist had decent conversational English. They were able to help me with everything effortlessly.
I was escorted to my room and of course, the bellhop insisted on taking my small suitcase for me. He left before I had a chance to tip him; I guess they don’t expect to be tipped.
Access
When you exit the airport, turn right and go past all the taxis. Wait in the corner in the small parking lot. Take the white van #165.
It will cost you 3 lei, and stay on until it terminates.
Go right and take the first left. Keep going and you’ll eventually see it. ↓
